Modal inflections add a depth of interest will pique the curiosity of all who listen.
What level is Quiet Retreat?
Quiet Retreat is a late elementary solo. The piece is in D Major, which is indicated with key signature. Dotted quarter notes are found throughout the melody, as well as several repeated eighth note phrases. The smallest note value is an eighth note. Helpful fingerings are included. Pedal markings are indicated. Dynamics are written throughout the piece.
There are modal inflections within the piece that are easy to play thanks to accidentals occurring within patterns that have been introduced and are now familiar in the piece. This piece contains both shorter and longer phrase markings, making it a wonderful chance for students to practice phrasing. Quiet Retreat fits easily under the hands, and the helpful fingerings make all hand position changes feel natural.
Bonus recording included!
Quiet Retreat comes with a bonus mp3 recording performed by Wendy Stevens. You are permitted to send this example performance track to your students to help them learn the piece.
Plus, a QR code is included on the first page of the PDF (not pictured in the sample) so students can scan the code and it will take them directly to the performance recording of the piece. This can help them be inspired and learn the piece even more effectively without you having to send the mp3 to them!

I’ve just given this to a Level 3 student to learn as a review and catch up piece for the beginning of the year, and at the same time to be learning something with a bit of a challenge. She is really enjoying it and getting on well with it. It sounds really nice.

My students love these lyrical pieces! Well written melody in a lovely arrangement with pedalling and just the right touch of fingering provided for the student. 5 stars!!
